24-Hour Adventures

As you may or may not know, the past few days have been full of fun, fleeting adventures for me (and Alex Weiss). I briefly touched upon the fact that I went to Boston on Saturday night to meet up with Matt and some BU friends of mine. I did not mention, however, that I was actually supposed to have arrived in Boston around noon that same day. My later-than-planned arrival can be blamed on the festivities of Friday night, which made it a bit hard to wake up early on Saturday morning. That was extremely upsetting for a number of reasons: 1) Jeffrey Goodman and his girlfriend, Ashley, decided last-minute to go to Boston for the day, so I missed out on a prime opportunity to both meet Ashley and hang out with her and Jeff; 2) I missed the screening of Mutual Appreciation that I'd been looking forward to for a couple weeks at least. I had plans to see it with Matt and quite a few of my film friends from BU, but because I missed it, I was not able to catch up with everyone I was supposed to have seen in Boston between Saturday and Sunday AND I missed seeing Matt on the Q&A panel following the screening (he was a PA for the film). Ugh! I am such an idiot! Saturday night was still fun, though. We hit up Matt's/Dan's/Sharky's/Ken's apartment for a bit and mostly just talked and laughed. Two great things. Then, because I was super exhausted, Matt and I went back to Brandeis and called it a day. Sunday I went to lunch with the same wonderful people, and then I drove around in my fabulous Matrix for a bit before Matt met up with me. Around 7pm, he and I picked Alex up at South Station and the three of us went to Anna's for dinner, making it my second trip to Anna's in the same day. Amazing. Afterwards, we hit up J.P. Licks for some incredible oreo ice cream (you could only understand my enthusiasm here if you have had J.P. Licks oreo ice cream), and then we got on this kick of trying to find Fun Dips, that beloved childhood candy favorite. It took us three tries to find a drug store that carried them, but we finally did and with Fun Dips in hand, we ventured to T.T. & the Bears to take in some live music. In other words, Sunday was packed with all sorts of craziness, and Alex and I drove back around 1am to find ourselves exhausted and ready for bed at Smith College circa 2:30am.

As for Monday, Alex and I drove to New Haven and took the Metro-North into the city since my car needs to go to the shop and I didn't want to push him/her. We met up with Sunil for dinner and went to the BEST SIT-DOWN MEXICAN RESTAURANT I have ever been to on the east coast, Mama's Mexico. It was unbelievable. And expensive. Our meal cost over $125 with tax and tip, and that was for three people! But it was so worth it. More worth it than most things I can think of. After basking in all the glory that was to be had in that fine specimen of a Mexican restaurant, Sunil peaced out, and Alex and I moved on to the next and most important phase of our evening: Erasure w/ Elkland at Irving Plaza. Let's just take a moment to discuss that Angela's prediction could not have been more accurate: Alex and I were, indeed, the only "straight, under-thirty-somethings" at the show. Everyone else was, as the gentlemen standing behind us in line so eloquently put it, "Gaysian," meaning gay or Asian. I guess it was a pretty easy call to make, though, when you consider how flamboyant Andy of Erasure is. Let's just say Erasure's set was bursting at the seams with costume changes aplenty, glitter, sequins, a "Happy Birthday to You" interlude on the occassion of Andy's birthday, and two trophy singers who danced and sang beautiful harmonies at Andy's side like nobody's business. And to end the set, Andy wore blue glitter underwear. That is all. Now, to be fair, for a forty-to-fifty-year-old, he is probably in pretty good shape, but still! He was wearing blue glitter underwear! I am still searching for pictures online that will capture the fabulousness albeit ridiculousness of Erasure's set, but I have yet to be successful. I promise I'm working on it, though. And now to speak of those beautiful, beautiful boys of Elkland, I can only say that there have been few instances in my life when I have felt so utterly like a middle-schooler with the biggest, most debilitating crush in the world as I did last night. Rumors are still surfacing with regard to each member's sexuality, but Joel (the keyboardist) is pretty much THE MOST BEAUTIFUL MALE I HAVE SEEN IN MY LIFE. (Wouldn't that be embarassing if he read this? Psych! Why would he ever read this, let alone know of my existence...) Alex and I were practically mute at the thought of how wonderful (ahem, and desirable) the members of Elkland are, and we had SO MANY CHANCES to talk to them in various stages of the evening but blew them all. At one point we passed Joel on the stairwell and managed to utter a flimsy:

Jen: You guys were awesome!
Alex: We 're really huge fans.

You guys are awesome? We're really huge fans? WTF? Ugh...

The night ended on such a high note, though, because we met back up with Sunil for a late-night diner experience at Tom's Diner in Columbia territory. Yes, THE Tom's Diner. I had a delectable ice cream sundae, and went to bed so positively content with my day's happenings that my sleep was better than ever. Thanks to Jon for putting us up for the night and entertaining us for our last moments of the evening. Too bad our NYC experience had to end, though... Although Alex missed class, we still thought it best to come back at a reasonable hour. Plus, I had Poofs' rehearsal tonight, which was quite unexpected since the past has always seen our spring concert putting an end to the rehearsal schedule. With recording in less than two weeks, we have a lot of work to do, though, so it seemed quite the necessity. I am still bitter, though, namely because I was in such a great cleaning mode upon arriving back to Smith to my sticky mess of a room post-Friday night Poofs'/Logs' debauchery. Meh.

Anyway, words are coming less easily now, so I think I will end this post. If anything else particularly pressing arises before I go to bed, though, I'll be sure to let you know. ;) Tomorrow is a busy day yet again, as I have to pick up boxes to ship stuff home in, stop by health services to sign forms for dropping classes, hit up the bank, take my car in, and do several other unexciting to-do list-worthy things. I'll try to squeeze a post in if you're lucky, though. G'nite!

D'oh! I forgot to tell you: I changed my cell phone number tonight so that my area code is, once again, indicative of my Orange County upbringing. I'm gonna go ahead and leave it out of this post, but if you want/need to know, you can obviously find out some top secret way or another.

PS. My car is yet unnamed. The possibility of naming him/her Keanu in keeping up with the theme of the Matrix was raised on Sunday. After having to refer to my car as him/her twice in this post already, this issue seems more relevent than ever. What do you think?
